For several, kite flying may be a pastime, an entertaining festive activity, or a passion. The fast-paced urban life in the towns in Kerala, however, has robbed the fun of many indigenous leisure activities such as kite flying, which are replaced by new-gen sporting activities such as cricket. For the kites made in Kerala, however, all is not lost. A club of kite-flying enthusiasts, Team Kerala-GOC, has been set up by the Kite Life Foundation, which will ironically fly the Kerala kites in the international skies this time.

Officially invited to represent India at the eighth Borneo International Kite Festival by Bintulu Development Authority, Sarawak, Malaysia' Team Kerala-GOC' The festival will take place in Bintulu, Sarawak, Malaysia from September 26-30 and is expected to bring in a lot of kite flyers from all over the world.

Team Kerala will compete with teams from more than 30 different countries. The 'Theyyam' themed kite that is more than 20 ft in height, with intricate applique work on it, would be the main attraction of the Kerala team. The kite when soared high would not only make us proud of our skills in kite flying, but also in showcasing the traditional temple and folk arts on overseas shores, which could draw more Kerala visitors. There are also kites built in the shape of the gold-plated caparisons of elephants paraded during temple festivals, which will literally carry Kerala's cultural diversity and richness into the sky.

Many typical Kerala recreational activities, such as kite flying, face a risk of extinction, mainly due to the lack of patrons to popularise these leisure activities. It is paradoxical that Kerala's younger generation spends more time playing sports such as cricket than conventional recreational activities. The loss of open spaces and hills and the growing popularity of gated community living have all been responsible for sounding the death knell of some of Kerala's leisure activities. In preserving these fascinating practices for posterity, it is high time for the government and the public to take an active role so that the Kerala kites fly high in our skies too!
