Alleppey Houseboat Experience in the Kerala Backwaters

Kerala group tour packages

Kerala's Backwaters are probably one of the biggest tourist attractions in all of Kerala, and I can tell you after I tried one of the Alleppey Houseboat Experiences: it's just an incredible adventure that you can't experience anywhere.

Where to book your Alleppey Houseboat tour?

The best way to get on an adventure with an Alleppey Houseboat is by booking it online in advance. There are different tour operators providing the best Kerala group tour packages including the various routes (more on that later in this post), rooms, service level, and much more. So it's best to decide before your journey, in my opinion, and book a tour that suits your needs.

You may also inquire at your hotel and/or check for agencies inside the country if you are already in Kerala. A big attraction is the Kerala Backwater Tours, so you shouldn't have a problem finding an acceptable tour to explore the backwaters of Kerala for you.

To explore the Kerala Backwaters, there are many routes you can take. The majority of people would leave Alleppey and make a round trip, finally returning to Alleppey. However, a one-way trip (that's what we did) is also possible, which makes a lot of sense if you want to directly hit another destination after your Kerala houseboat trip.

Here are some of the most common routes:

Alleppey-Kuttanad: This road, one of my favorite things in Kerala, has a wide network of narrow backwaters and is ideal for experiencing local village life.  Alleppey-Alumkadavu: The road leads to Alumkadavu, which is quite a long way from Kollam. Fun fact: the houseboats in Kerala are originally from there.  Alleppey-Kumarakom: You'll be inside a much larger canal on this path, which is a very different experience.

Best time to see the Kerala Backwaters

From December to January: Peak Season! The best time to visit the Kerala Backwaters is possible because it is colder and drier, making for a relaxing experience. Prices are higher, however, and more other visitors will be there.

From February to May: Summer! You might think about doing the Houseboat tour during that duration if you can stand hot temperatures. Prices are cheaper and there are definitely going to be fewer individuals around. During that time, I did the tour and loved it! I'd highly recommend an air-con, though,
